THÔNG TIN KHOÁ HỌC
Kieu is a masterpiece in the classical literature of Viet Nam. The author of this work is Nguyen Du (1765 – 1820). His other names and pseudonyms include To Nhu, Thanh Hien, Hong Son, Lap Ho and Nam Hai Dieu Do. He was born in the village of Tien Dien, in Nghi Xuan district of Ha Tinh province, into a family of scholars and illustrious mandarins. Having successfully passed the provincial examinations at the age of nineteen, he served as a military mandarin under Le Canh Hung. After the downfall of the Le Dynasty, he refused to serve the Tay Son family. He was mixed up in several abortive conspiracies and was detained for some time. Then he went to live in the North of the country and in his native village – a particularly fecund period where the talent and sensitivity of the poet matured in contact with the sufferings of the people.
After the eclipse of the Tay Son, he grudgingly agreed to serve under Gia Long, founder of the Nguyen Dynasty. In his heart he always remained faithful to the Le, the legitimate dynasty according to Confucian ethics. He was appointed Le Bo Huu Tham Tri (Right-hand Deputy Minister at the Ministry of Rites). In 1813 he was sent on a diplomatic mission to China. He died in 1820 before leaving for another mission to China.
